The Ultimate Guide to Nissan Maintenance: Spot Problems Early

Keeping your Subaru in good condition and working efficiently requires maintenance. The Nissan maintenance schedule in your vehicle handbook lists all the types of maintenance your vehicle needs. Regularly scheduled maintenance ensures small issues are detected and fixed early before they can develop into problems. As your Nissan dealership, we want to tell you about a few of the many types of maintenance we provide. more Check Belts and Hoses The serpentine belt connects to the crankshaft and runs across several pulleys. The belt's movement causes the pulleys to spin and powers the systems connected to them, like the alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor. Your vehicle also contains several hoses, the most important of which are the two radiator hoses that connect the radiator to the cooling system. These components are made from toughened rubber, but the rubber will slowly lose flexibility. Lack of flexibility causes belts and hoses to crack, and cracks in the radiator hose will cause a leak and immediate loss of engine coolant. Belts and hoses are checked every 6,000 miles to ensure they're still in good condition and replaced if needed. Your Nissan's second belt, the timing belt, is also checked, but it usually only requires replacement around 50,000 miles. Brake Fluid Replacement Brake fluid is used to force the brake system to engage. It's highly pressurized, and when you hit the brakes, the fluid is forced through the hoses to the calipers. The fluid forces the calipers to close on the spinning rotors. Brake pads inside the calipers generate friction against the rotors, which brings them to a halt. The fluid is usually replaced every 20,000 miles, as older fluid absorbs water. When you have to brake frequently within a short period, the fluid can overheat and boil. Boiling water in the fluid forms air bubbles that can travel through the system and block the brake fluid's movement. Overheated brake fluid doesn't generate hydraulic power, and your brakes can fail. Air Filter Replacement The engine air filter is housed in a small box inside the radiator grille. Air flows in through the radiator and enters the filter. The filter traps dirt and other debris, allowing the now-clean air to enter the engine. Inside the engine, the air mixes with fuel to form the fuel-air mixture, which is ignited in the engine cylinders to create combustion. The air filter is replaced between 15,000 and 30,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions, as it will become blocked with dirt. A blocked filter restricts airflow into the engine, which causes engine damage. Book your scheduled maintenance today by contacting us at Geri Lynn Nissan in Houma, LA.
